Creamliner

Museum of Ice Cream

For the Museum of Ice Cream’s Miami location, we worked with their team to design and build a practical plane set which was wrapped with LED window screens, then we created a virtual world and narrative using Unreal Engine to seamlessly transport guests from reality into a whimsical ice cream wonderland—creating a fully immersive travel experience like no other.

Project Breakdown

*Test render of the full experience *

My job for this project was to create 2 sims/effects for this immersive experience.

  1. Turn assets given to me by our environment artist into cute fluffy pink clouds
  2. Create a “sprinkle-storm” system during the turbulent sections of the experience.

I used Houdini for both of these tasks.

The clouds were created by converting the fbx assets into VDBs, the trick to get these tasty fluffy clouds are really all in the materials

Since the effect is ever only going to be viewed from one POV and out of a window, it was crucial to really nail down the art direction of this effect with the environment artist early in the process to ensure that the audience member would be able to feel “storm-vibes.” After that it was just a matter of creating a custom velocity field in houdini and then exporting a vdb of a smoke traversing that field as well as exporting a point cache out to use in Niagara to sample in these cute sprinkles.
